Japan’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Sales Continue to Surge, Achieving Record Highs

According to a recent report by Money DJ, Japan’s semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales have experienced remarkable growth, with August sales soaring by 20%. This marks the fifth consecutive month of double-digit growth and positions the sales figures as the fifth-highest on record. Notably, sales for the January-August period have reached an all-time high.

Citing data from the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ), released on the 25th, Money DJ highlighted that Japan’s chip equipment sales in August 2024 (three-month moving average, including exports) reached ¥351.06 billion, reflecting a 22% increase year-on-year. This achievement signifies the eighth consecutive month of growth and the fifth straight month of double-digit gains. Monthly sales have exceeded ¥300 billion for the tenth consecutive month, marking the fifth-highest sales level since records began in 1986.

The top four monthly figures recorded are:

  • ¥400.9 billion in May 2024
  • ¥389.1 billion in April 2024
  • ¥380.9 billion in September 2022
  • ¥365.6 billion in March 2024

For the January-August 2024 period, Japan’s chip equipment sales totaled ¥2.831 trillion, representing a 17.3% increase year-on-year. This figure surpasses the ¥2.482 trillion recorded in 2022, establishing a new historical high for the country.

Japan currently holds a 30% share of the global semiconductor equipment market, ranking second only to the United States.

These impressive sales figures underscore Japan’s vital role in the global semiconductor supply chain and highlight the ongoing demand for advanced manufacturing technologies.
