27-March-2027 —GlobalFoundries (GF) has initiated legal action against Tower Semiconductor, filing complaints in both the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.
The lawsuits allege that Tower has infringed multiple GF patents and is effectively leveraging decades of GF’s research and development without authorization. According to GF, Tower is “freeriding” on its innovation rather than investing in the extensive, long-term development required to build similar technologies independently.
At the center of the dispute are 11 U.S. patents related to high-performance semiconductor manufacturing processes. These technologies are critical across several key markets, including mobile, automotive, aerospace, and communications infrastructure.
GlobalFoundries is seeking injunctive relief that could block the import and sale of the allegedly infringing products in the United States. In addition, the company is pursuing financial compensation for damages and lost profits.
Both GF and Tower operate as foundry providers and compete directly in segments such as analog, RF, and silicon photonics. The outcome of this case could have broader implications for competition and intellectual property enforcement within the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
