Artificial intelligence is redefining how the next generation of datacenter networks are architected. With traditional copper connections nearing their limits, silicon photonics leverages light to deliver higher bandwidth and improved energy efficiency, driving the next wave of datacenter innovation.
To address this critical need across datacenters and long-haul communications, GF is taking decisive steps to advance silicon photonics and reinforce its leadership in the field through two strategic acquisitions: Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a silicon photonics foundry based in Singapore, and InfiniLink, a startup specializing in advanced optical data connectivity chips, based in Cairo, Egypt.
These strategic acquisitions, in addition to expanding manufacturing capacity, turbocharge our roadmap. They expand our manufacturing muscle and enhance our design capabilities, enabling us to deliver a superior, broader roadmap for both pluggable transceivers and co-packaged optics (CPO). This opens new opportunities into adjacent markets like sensing and quantum computing.
Why AMF: Capability, reach and resilience
AMF is a premier silicon photonics foundry with a proven 200 mm platform and deep expertise in “within data center” and “long‑haul” optical communications. This acquisition means instant capacity, broader technology and a competitive advantage across AI datacenters and communications. We will continue to support demand on AMF’s 200mm lines and, as the market grows, we have a clear path advancing toward 300mm in Singapore—improving supply assurance across regions globally.
This acquisition also accelerates our Singapore operations and complements our U.S. photonics footprint, enabling us to serve silicon photonics markets in both North America and Asia, helping our customers build secure, resilient supply chains. As for what’s next in Singapore, we intend to establish a Silicon Photonics Center of Excellence, including collaboration with A*STAR, to advance next‑generation materials, packaging and platforms targeting 400G/λ based solutions.
With AMF joining GF, we expect to become the largest pure‑play silicon photonics foundry by revenue.
Why InfiniLink: Design depth for connectivity
InfiniLink, a design-focused company with deep expertise in connectivity chips, brings advanced capabilities in high‑speed connectivity, including SerDes, optical transceiver chipsets and monolithic silicon photonics. Every customer engagement at GF starts with a deep discussion about system architecture, link budget, and a variety of design choices. Their engineering talent and IP enhance GF’s in‑house design capabilities and will help a broad range of customers strengthen their optics roadmaps and design into GF. Together, they enable our customers’ differentiation and delivery of complete optical engine modules for both pluggable and co-packaged optics—accelerating innovation and optimizing performance.
Better together: Manufacturing and design for end‑to‑end differentiation
Adding AMF’s manufacturing expertise and InfiniLink’s design expertise and portfolio to GF’s established silicon photonics business helps accelerate the journey from a great concept to a qualified product running high in volume, further streamlining time to value for customers.
Here’s what that means:
What our customers can expect
These strategic acquisitions will expand GF’s technology portfolio, both inside and outside the datacenter.
Customers can expect secure, in-region supply with additional manufacturing value supported by complementary facilities in both the U.S. and Singapore, providing multi-region sourcing and stronger supply chain resilience.
With expanded technology capabilities brought into GF’s portfolio through new solutions, IP and talent, customers will also benefit from faster innovation cycles, with integrated design and manufacturing that accelerate progress toward 400G/λ solutions. And with closer co-development, partners can engage earlier on complete CPO modules and connectivity chipsets, working more seamlessly with hyperscalers and enterprise customers from the start.
Forging a strong path forward
Silicon photonics is an essential infrastructure for the AI era, and we’re excited to partner with companies that share this vision. With the latest acquisitions of AMF and InfiniLink, GF is building a globally competitive, innovation‑driven “GDS to OE module” platform that helps customers move data faster and more efficiently.
