Sony and TSMC Reportedly Plan $6.3 Billion Joint Venture for Next-Generation Image Sensors

Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are reportedly preparing to invest approximately ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) in a new joint venture focused on the development and production of next-generation image sensors in Japan.

 

According to a Nikkei report cited by Reuters, Sony is expected to hold a 60% stake in the joint venture, while TSMC would own the remaining 40%. Commercial production could begin as early as 2029.

 

The reported investment represents a significant expansion of a partnership that the two semiconductor companies officially announced earlier this year.

 

Sony and TSMC Already Confirmed Image Sensor Partnership

On May 8, 2026, Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic partnership for the development and manufacturing of next-generation image sensors.

 

Under the proposed partnership, the companies said they intended to establish a joint venture in which Sony would be the majority and controlling shareholder. Development and manufacturing lines are planned for Sony’s newly constructed semiconductor fab in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

 

The combination brings together two particularly strong semiconductor capabilities:

  • Sony: CMOS image sensor architecture, design and imaging technology
  • TSMC: semiconductor process technology and high-volume manufacturing

 

The companies expect the collaboration to improve image sensor performance while addressing growing requirements from emerging imaging and sensing applications.

 

Investment Could Reach $6.3 Billion

The latest report provides significantly more detail on the potential scale of the project. Sony and TSMC are reportedly considering combined investment of approximately ¥1 trillion, equivalent to around $6.3 billion, with Sony owning around 60% of the new company and TSMC approximately 40%. The companies are expected to finalize the investment arrangements in the coming months, according to the report. Production of the next-generation devices could start as early as 2029. These financial terms and the 60/40 ownership structure have not yet been formally confirmed by Sony or TSMC. Sony declined to comment on the Nikkei report when contacted by Reuters.

 

Targeting Automotive, Robotics and Physical AI

The importance of advanced image sensors is growing beyond traditional smartphone and digital-camera applications.

Sony Holds More Than Half of the Image Sensor Market

Sony is already the world’s largest supplier of image sensors. According to Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the company holds approximately 53% of the global image sensor market by revenue and has stated an ambition to increase its share toward 60%. Sony’s devices are used across smartphones, digital cameras, automotive systems and security cameras.

 

Partnering more closely with TSMC could allow Sony to combine its leading sensor architectures with the manufacturing capabilities and semiconductor process technologies of the world’s largest pure-play semiconductor foundry. This is particularly important as modern image sensors become more complex.

 

Rather than operating simply as arrays of photodiodes converting light into electrical signals, high-end image sensors increasingly combine sensing structures with sophisticated digital processing, high-speed interfaces and stacked semiconductor architectures.

 

Kumamoto Becoming a Major Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub

The project would further strengthen Kumamoto Prefecture as one of Japan’s most important semiconductor manufacturing regions. TSMC already operates in Kumamoto through Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), its majority-owned manufacturing subsidiary. In 2024, TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, DENSO and Toyota announced additional investment in JASM to construct a second fab in Kumamoto. That fab is scheduled to begin operation by the end of 2027.

 

The new Sony-controlled image sensor venture would be separate from JASM but would further deepen the manufacturing relationship between Sony and TSMC. Sony itself also maintains major semiconductor manufacturing operations in Kumamoto, alongside facilities in Nagasaki, Yamagata and Oita.

 

A Strategic Shift in Image Sensor Manufacturing

The potential $6.3 billion investment is notable because it represents more than a straightforward capacity expansion. Sony has historically developed and manufactured many of its most important image sensor technologies internally. Bringing TSMC deeper into the development and production process suggests that advanced sensor manufacturing is increasingly benefiting from the same specialization that transformed the broader semiconductor industry.

 

TSMC brings advanced process development, manufacturing scale and foundry expertise, while Sony contributes sensor architectures, pixel technology and detailed knowledge of imaging applications. For the semiconductor supply chain, the partnership also highlights the growing convergence between CMOS image sensors, logic processing and AI. As autonomous vehicles, robots and other intelligent machines require higher-resolution cameras and more processing closer to the sensor, image sensors are increasingly becoming complex semiconductor systems rather than standalone imaging components.

 

If the reported investment proceeds as planned, Sony and TSMC could begin mass production from the Kumamoto operation as early as 2029, creating another major semiconductor manufacturing platform in Japan and strengthening the country’s rapidly expanding image-sensor and specialty-semiconductor ecosystem.
