Job Description:

Amazon Industrial Robotics is looking for a motivated Hardware Functional Safety Engineer to design safety-relevant controls for robotics systems and industrial equipment. The ideal candidate will integrate established safety principles and standards into innovative solutions within the robotics industry, reporting directly to the System Architect.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide the design of controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment to ensure functional safety.
  • Perform hazard and risk assessments, and conduct safety analyses of robotics and industrial automation equipment.
  • Write or review safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, safety concepts, and verification and validation plans.
  • Apply IEC industrial standards throughout the development lifecycle of robotic control systems and coach developers on these processes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to execute product designs from concept to production, including design, prototype, test, validation, and certification.
  • Write or review functional specifications, design verification plans, and test procedures.
  • Analyze failure modes of control circuits, assess their effects, and identify mitigations and diagnostics.
  • Drive projects to closure, ensuring systems are manufacturable, deployable, maintainable, and compliant with regulatory certification requirements.
  • Ensure control systems comply with machinery safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496).

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of experience with complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with safety programs from concept through certification/regulatory processes.
  • Strong ability to navigate between system-level concepts and detailed implementation.
  • Experience in a regulated industry (Functional Safety, Military, Medical, Automotive, Robotics) applying relevant standards.

Skills:

  • Experience in programmatic testing of products and measuring test coverage.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Skill in understanding business and customer needs and translating them into effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in identifying and resolving complex issues.
  • Familiarity with electronic systems including microcontrollers, FPGAs, and mixed-signal designs.
  • Commitment to complex, multi-year programs.
